Olive leaf, from the Olive tree, is native to the Mediterranean, and has thousands of years of knowledge and use with its fruit and oil, but also as a medicinal plant via the leaf. It is one of our oldest known herbal medicines, which feels like an amazing resource to be accessing!
Tapping into the energy and spirit of Olive, as a plant it feels so old, so ancient. When I was sitting on my verandah stripping the leaves off the branches in preparation for tincturing it, it was just this feeling of ancient, ancient wisdom being present all around me.
“I was there” Olive said to me. “Aristotle, the Egyptians, Hippocrates, the Greeks, the Romans - so much ancient wisdom you read about and still access today - I (Olive) was there as all of those incredible minds shared their work and gifts. I was there, to bear witness, to listen, and learn from them. The essence of much of this wisdom lives on inside me, a reservoir of which you are free to tap into when working with me.”
There is a huge Olive tree on my parents property, which I now live on, the same land I grew up on as a child. This is the tree this medicine comes from. I remember going out to harvest the branches to make this medicine and a soft rain was falling. Being tucked under the big branches of this tree meant I barely got wet as I worked, feeling a bit like I was little again, tucked under the skirts of an elder.

Psycho-Spiritual/Emotional Properties
Olive and Olive leaf are often associated with resilience and renewal, reflecting the strength and endurance of the Olive tree itself. As Olive trees can live for hundreds or thousands of years, there is a deep seated stoicism we can learn from Olive, being deeply rooted, centered and vital amidst the things on our path that can be wearying. Child bearing, a period of prolonged stress, caring for others, illness - if you are weary of spirit, Olive can be a faithful and steadfast ally to walk beside you, and revitalise you in your journey. Let Olive help foster and re-discover the wells of inner-strength within you.
Top Health Indications:
Immune & Respiratory Systems: Olive leaf has shown significant anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties against microbes such as the influenza (‘The Flu’), rhinovirus (common cold), herpes simplex (cold sores), E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhimurium and Candida albicans.
This results in Olive leaf being of particular use for the respiratory system, combating infections that cause colds and flus that may also move down into the chest, as well as the digestive system, combating gut infections like E. coli, Salmonella and Candida.
Cardiovascular system: Olive leaf has a solid body of both animal and human trials showing capacity to significantly reduce blood pressure via its capacity to increase vasodilation.
It is such a perfect plant for the cardiometabolic presentation common in so many: the combination of high blood pressure/poor cardiovascular health, high cholesterol/atherosclerosis and insulin resistance/blood sugar dysregulation. Due to the hypotensive and strongly anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties Olive leaf carries, it actually works on the foundational issues that cause this end stage presentation - inflammation, oxidative stress and damage at the cellular level of the cardiovascular system that occurs with aging, genetic predisposition, and/or poor lifestyle and dietary habits.
Main Contraindications and Drug Interactions
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: there is not a robust amount of information on the safety of Olive leaf during these times. It is generally considered safe for long term use, and contains no constituents that would affect uterine health or the health of a developing foetus. The CSIRO state to limit the intake of Olive leaf during these periods, pregnancy especially, to food levels.
I would recommend this at 2 droppers per day, which will give you equivalent to 1g of herb material, which is what long term safety studies have been done on.
For any patients taking prescription medications for high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes/ hyperglycemia - use caution and monitor, as it may have an additive effect due to the beneficial action Olive Leaf has on the cardiovascular system.
